Sultan Brooch - Sinbad or The Thief of Bagdad?

www.ajraefields.comThis wonderful pot metal brooch was found in a recent estate acquistion.(This is a quick scan) I initially assumed this was the Thief of Bagdad. In doing some research on the internet I am wondering if perhaps it is Sindbad. What do you think?

The line up:

The Thief of Bagdad Inspiration:

#1 1924 Douglas Fairbanks "The Theif of Bagdad" - Right face, Right stash, but no goatee

#2 1940 Conrad Veidt "Thief of Bagdad"  Very tiny moustache, still no goatee

Next ideas:

Jon Hall of 1942 Arabian Nights has no Facial Hair at all

1947 Sindbad (Douglas Fairbanks) has a goatee and the right face, I think he is our winner!

Fantastic Find: One Word-- Plastics. Vintage Bangle Bracelets

1970's - 1980's Bangle Bracelets

1980s lucite bracelet, just $9.95.We have recently acquired an impressive assortment of fabulous lucite Italian-made bangle and lucite clamp bracelets!  These bangle and hinged cuffs were made in the 1970s and 1980s, and come in uniquely rich colors, with marble accents, and unique flecked highlights.  These styles are rare to find these days.  Check out the dark green example to the left.

Another piece of this fab vintage jewelry find is the clamp bracelet to the right, colored in a spectacularly uncommon brown marbled finish of lucite complete with hinge.  The look is fantastically modern, despite its 80s origin, as the plastic chunky jewelry look has become a modern fashion staple!Italian-made brown and black marbled clamp bracelet.

These vintage bracelets are a perfect way to express that elusive originality in accenting your outfits, with 2 competing looks that somehow form fashion harmony.  Worn stacked or single, these vintage bangles are unexpected in color, cooly marbled, and for sale at (of course!) affordable prices!

Italian-made vintage red clamp bracelet. It’s no coincidence that one of the biggest bands of the 80s was named “the Bangles”.  Ever the fashionistas, the girl-band gave themselves the perfect moniker, signaling their playful yet funky nature.  And their music still resonates today, just like the heavily bangled arms we still see on the runways.

Bangles in the B.C: A Retrospect

Bangled beauty, as depicted in 320 B.C. Indian art.Bangles were popularized much before the 1980s, in fact. They can be considered really retro, as they were worn four thousand years ago!  Even B.C. babes' wrists were jangling.  First worn in India, especially by Hindu women, they were both accessories and symbols.  They were initially worn to symbolize marriage and matrimony, especially by new brides.  These original bangles were obviously not made of the plastic and lucite we know today, but by similarly smooth natural materials like shell, copper ore, agate, and glass.

Check out the evidence in this genuine piece of Indian art, created during India's Gupta Empire (circa 320 B.C.)

Who can argue with a centuries-old trend?

But enough with the history lesson!  All you need to know (if you’re not a jewelry junkie like my coworkers and me) is that the bangle (and their cousin, the chunky clamp bracelet) is a time-tested trend that you’d be foolish to overlook this fashion season.

Fantastic Finds Auction Item Spotlight #2: Vintage Napier Bracelet Earrings Set

Item #2 in our Fantastic Finds Auction preview is a lovely Vintage Napier Purple Clip Earrings and Bracelet set.

This impressive Napier jewelry set includes a studded steel link bracelet with large purple glass rhinestones, and matching clip earrings.  Napier made this set in the 1950-60s, and though it is an estate piece, it is in excellent condition, showing only slight tarnishing that does not detract from the brilliance of the piece.

A noteable facet of this particular Napier sets is its creative use of metalwork.  The steel studded metalwork Napier utilizes in these pieces are actually inspired by those seen on Victorian steel studded shoeclips so popular in 1800s-early 1900s.  Compare the studded metalwork on the Napier pieces (left, below) with the studded steel metalwork on a genuine Victorian piece (photo on the right.)Compare the studded metalwork on the Napier earrings and bracelet to this pair of Victorian shoe clips (*NOT INCLUDED IN SALE*)Steel bracelet and clip earrings by Napier

Both the bracelet and the clip earrings are signed Napier. .

Found: Frank Hess Amourelle Parure

This beautiful set was recently acquired from an estate in West Hartford, Connecticut.  Though by all accounts it could pass as a Miriam Haskell, it is actually from the Amourelle line, produced for Kramer in the early 1960's.  The reason for the striking similarities between Amourelle and Miriam Haskell is simple: designer Frank HessThe "Amourelle" stamping.

Mr. Hess was the main jewelry designer for Miriam Haskell from the late 1920's until 1960, when he formally left the company.  Following his departure from Miriam Haskell, he took up with Kramer for a short-lived stint developing Amourelle.

We are lucky to be able to identify these Amourelle pieces, as only the earrings are signed.  But this is clearly a parure, as indicated by the identical stylings on the bracelet, earrings and necklaces, as well as their smoky gray beading.

Superior craftsmanship is a hallmark of Frank Hess, and is the reason for his success and fame in the jewelry community.  His talent is seen in abundance in the designs of Miriam Haskell, but Amourelle for Kramer lasted just a few years.  The construction, componants, and quality of his designs can be noted in both lines.

Mr. Hess's attention to detail is exquisite.  Note the incricate designs of the bracelet.

A view of the set on a form. "Amourelle" literally means "love her" in French; obviously Frank Hess had a love of accentuating the feminine form.  He would finalize many of his designs atop live models to ensure the pieces hung right on the female frame.

Clearly, Frank Hess was unique in bringing artful designs to life.  This parure of his was an exceptional discovery.

This parure is auctioning on eBay in an auction ending 12/21/09, be sure not to miss it!
