Halloween Costume on a Budget: Princess Leia

You don't have to be a Star Wars geek to appreciate the allure of Princess Leia. Definitely one the smartest, sexiest, and most classic movie characters of all time, the best part about this costume is how easy it is to replicate.

The basis for the costume is a long white robe or gown.  There are at least two ways to go with this.  The first is the classic Leia, seen to the left.  This is the look we know and love—high necked and ankle length, this was her royal garb.

Of course, it all comes together with Leia's trademark metallic belt.  Choose a chunky metallic silver or gold antique tone belt, and you’re good to go.  Add a chunky silver choker and chunky silver earrings to bring the look together.

As a child, I used my altar server’s robe from church (I’m not sure the clergy would approve, but it looked awesome) to dress up as Leia.  It is also easy to fabricate a quick replica from a white shirt, white leggings and a cleverly-pinned white sheet.

For the more feminine Leia look, copy her costume from the classic scene in A New Hope (photo on the right) in which Leia presents Luke Skywalker and Han Solo with medals of honor.  Again, a long white gown is required, but this time, make it more low cut.  The key to THIS Leia incarnation is, of course, a replica of her famous silver choker necklace

The alternate Leia look involves a high braided bun.  Check out these other imitations of Princess Leia's silver necklace below.

It helps to have long hair, of course, for the legendary double cinnamon-bun hairstyle, which is easily recreated with a parting comb, bobby pins, and heavy duty hairspray.  Those with light hair or short hair can get a cheap Leia wig at any Halloween shop.

Go low cost, high impact costume this Halloween. Ward off any Star Wars purists out there with your homemade light saber— blue spray-painted cardboard paper tube worked for me in the 4th, 8th, AND 11th grades!

Princess Leia is the perfect pop-culture icon for Halloween. I know she's a bit overdone, but the women who can pull her off can be quite stunning. She has number of vintage-future outfits to choose from as well.

@Luc Jenson,

I agree! Leia is a classic cliche of a costume, but there's always room for a new twist on the look.
