Halloween Costume on a Budget: Modern Vampire / Vampiress

Vampires have always been a popular Halloween costume, but lately, our idea of vampires has gotten much different.  Thanks to Twilight and HBO's True Blood, blood-suckers have morphed into alluring, sexy creatures who look just like us.  Dracula capes are a thing of the past.

This makes for much more interesting Halloween costume possibilities.  By focusing on a few key accessories, you can whip up a cheap costume that displays your vampire love.

One awesome Halloween costume this year is True Blood's vampire queen, Sophie-Anne Leclerq (played by Evan Rachel Wood).  Emulate her 1950's glamour with a white cocktail dress as your basis, and drape yourselsf in affordable replicas of the glam accessories she is rarely seen without.  Big glitzy earrings and layers of pearls, and red lipstick are a start.

As queen, Sophie-Anne has plenty of subjects to "feed" upon whenever she must.  Pick up some plastic fangs at a discount store, and be sure to include a heavy (but artful) application of fake blood, especially around the mouth. To really nail that freshly-fed sexy vampiress look, and spend just pennies, make fake blood at home with this recipe from eHow.com.  It's better than the costume shop tubes because, once dry, it stays in place!

So, for your True Blood costume, remember the jewelry: layered faux-pearls, sparkly rhinestone earrings, a cocktail ring, maybe even vintage sunglasses.  These will all serve to transform you into the blood-sucking vixen we all know and love.

In this same "vein" (sorry, I had to), Twilight is another obvious choice for Halloween costume inspiration.  Women can dress up as Bella-- easiest costume ever.  She's a plain dresser, so you can just wear street clothes, look forlorn, and pop on a (cheap!) imitation of her trademark turquoise cuff bracelet.  Enlist your palest friend to be your Edward (or a hairier friend to play your werewolf, Jacob) and you're good to go.

Artfully placed blood spatter is good for a Bella Swan costume, especially on her wrist wound, but you can really lay it on thick around your Robert character's faux-fangs, to ensure people get the idea.

The vampires we see in pop culture today are intriguing because they walk among us.  So this year, vampire costumes are perfect to make at the last minute, and with minimal effort.  Honestly, just a few accessories added to things you already have in the closet will do wonders to morph you into your favorite modern vampire, or vampire-loving, character this Halloween.
